HIGHLIGHTS; During the spring of 2000, four teams began play in a four game mini-season named "Festival 2000." The League's goal for the 2000 season had been to test markets, fans, stadiums, media, sponsors, and entertainment, as well as obtain answers regarding the football product. Festival 2000 season was supposed to combine professional football in the spring along with musical entertainment. Such acts as the O'Jays, Mark Wills, and Poncho Sanchez were on the SFL menu. After only two weekends of games, with very low attendance, the SFL abruptly ended its Festival 2000. The league announced that it gathered the information it was looking for and would immediately focus on expanding to an eight-team league for a full schedule in 2001. Not soon after the end of Festival 2000, the WWF announced it plans for the XFL, and the SFL then died a quiet death.

SATURDAY MAY 6
HOUSTON 40, Miami 10 (700) - Outlaws RB Shon Mitchell ran for 166 yards and 3 touchdowns, as Houston was named co-champions. Two Miami Tropics quarterbacks completed just eight passes for 71 yards and were sacked a total of four times as they lost to the Houston Marshals, 40-10 at Robertson Stadium on Saturday. Quarterback Kevin Clark completed just five passes for 36 yards, threw three interceptions, and was sacked twice as the Tropics failed to get their offense kick started against an aggressive Houston defense. Running back Clement Stokes provided the only bright spot for Miami, as he rushed 4 times for 26 yards and provided the Tropics with their only touchdown. Miami punter Ty Grude got a workout Saturday by punting seven times for a total of 312 yards for a 44.5 yards per kick average including a 62-yarder.
SAN ANTONIO 21, Los Angeles 8 (1500) - The Matadors, sparked by a tremendous defensive performance, beat the Los Angeles Dragons 21-8 in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. Linebacker Errict Herrin led the defense with 11 tackles and caused havoc in the Dragons backfield the entire game. Matadors head coach Brian Wiggins added, "Errict was a man among boys out there and his leadership is something the team feeds off of." The Matadors continued were they left off in week one, capitalizing on two Dragon turnovers and converting both into scores. Punter Jason Malecki continued his impressive performance averaging 52 yards per punt and continually pinned L.A. deep in their own territory. The offense was led by running back Cy Butler, who rushed seven times for 39 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Ronald Humphrey added another, on a sixteen-yard swing pass from quarterback David Kennedy mid-way through the second quarter. The victory pushed the Matadors to a perfect 2-0.

SUPER BOWL 35 (January 28, 2001 at Tampa)
BALTIMORE RAVENS (15-4) 34, NEW YORK GIANTS (14-4) 7 - The Ravens' defense completed a dominating season by permitting just 152 yards, forcing 5 turnovers, recording 4 sacks, and not allowing an offensive touchdown en route to the franchise’s first Super Bowl victory. Jermaine Lewis’s punt return into Giants’ territory midway through the first quarter was followed two plays later by Trent Dilfer’s 38-yard TD pass to Brandon Stokley, which gave the Ravens a 7-0 lead. Early in the second quarter, Jessie Armstead intercepted a short pass by Dilfer and returned it 43 yards for a touchdown, but the play was nullified by a penalty. Dilfer’s 36-yard pass to Qadry Ismail in the second quarter set up Matt Stover’s 47-yard field goal with 1:48 left in the half. Tiki Barber’s 27-yard run gave the Giants their deepest penetration of the game, to the Ravens’ 29, but Chris McAlister intercepted Kerry Collins’s pass on the next play to preserve a 10-0 lead. In the third quarter, Duane Starks stepped in front of Amani Toomer and intercepted Collins’s pass. Starks returned it 49 yards untouched for a 17-0 lead. The Giants immediately cut the lead to 10 points when Ron Dixon returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a TD. However, Jermaine Lewis then matched Dixon’s kickoff return as he cut across the field and raced 84 yards for a 24-7 lead with 3:13 left in the third quarter. The 3 TDs in 36 seconds were a Super Bowl record. The Giants gained just 1 first down on their final four possessions. Jamal Lewis’s 3-yard TD run midway through the fourth quarter game Baltimore a 31-7 lead, and Robert Bailey recovered Dixon’s fumble on the ensuing kickoff return to set up Stover’s 34-yard FG with 5:27 remaining to finish the scoring. Dilfer completed 12 of 25 passes for 153 yards and 1 TD. Jamal Lewis had 27 carries for 102 yards. Collins was 15 of 39 for 112 yards, with 4 interceptions. Ray Lewis was named MVP.

SATURDAY APRIL 29
Houston 16, LOS ANGELES 13 (1100) - The Los Angeles Dragons, despite the 111-yard rushing performance of running back Saladin McCollough, dropped their home opener to the Houston Marshals at the Memorial Coliseum. Former UCLA kicker Chris Sailer nailed a 48-yarder with 5:48 left to tie the game at 13, before Houston's Kerry Henderson returned the ensuing kickoff 48 yards to put the Marshals back in business. Marshals' kicker Kyle Bryant chipped, what was to be the game winner, through the uprights to give Houston a 16-13 lead. The Dragons saw their comeback come to a screeching halt as quarterback Justin Vedder threw an errant pass that was picked off by Johnnie Dixon deep in Houston territory.
San Antonio 16, MIAMI 13 (1000) - The Matadors kicked off the SFL's inaugural season with a late come-from-behind victory over the Miami Tropics at the Orange Bowl. With just over three minutes left in the game, the Matadors capitalized on a Miami turnover deep in their own territory as place kicker Brandon Kornblue, kicked a 33-yard game winning field goal with 1:38 left in the game. The excitement was not over, as the Tropics refused to quit. They drove the length of the field only to miss a game winning field goal of their own. Coach Brian Wiggins used the team's last two timeouts to freeze Miami place kicker Chris Gardner. Running back Ricky Powers led the Matadors with 76 yards on 21 rushes and added another 34 yards on four receptions. Their only touchdown of the day came in the third quarter when David Kennedy hit tight end Ron Sterling in the end zone with a 5-yard strike.

May 8, 2000 - SFL Adjusts Focus to 2001 Season

After successfully completing half of its Festival 2000, the Spring Football League's Board of Governors and Executive Committee announced today that the League will conclude its market test and immediately focus on expanding to an eight-team league for a full schedule in 2001. The League's goal for the 2000 season has been to test markets, fans, stadiums, media, sponsors, and entertainment, as well as obtain answers regarding the football product. Answers were also needed about the overall concepts advanced by the League's Board of Governors. League and team representatives held a scheduled meeting in Houston Sunday morning, discussed every aspect of the product, and decided to conclude activities now so the League can prepare in earnest for 2001. The League's agenda includes selection of expansion markets, continued evaluation of the four markets tested this year, and conversations with ownership candidates. In addition, the League remains committed to its unique diversity program and will work to secure financing for minority ownership prospects. The SFL will refund advance ticket sales. In addition, the SFL will fulfill the League's financial commitment to stadiums, entertainers and all other League-contracted parties. Players will be paid through the second game, plus each active player and taxi squad player as of Saturday's game will receive a partial week's salary as a bonus and an inaugural season ring.
