Green Bay Packers (3-4) 24, Minnesota Vikings (1-5) 10
Sunday October 28th 1990 (at Milwaukee)
(MILWAUKEE) - Darrell Thompson ran 12 yards for his first career touchdown and Shawn Patterson returned an interception nine yards for another score as the Green Bay Packers handed the Vikings their fifth straight loss, 24-10. Green Bay intercepted five passes in beating the Vikings for the sixth time in the last seven meetings. The Vikings, their season in disarray, fell to 1-6. Thompson's touchdown run with 4:23 left in the second quarter gave the Packers a 10-3 halftime lead. Patterson's interception in the third quarter just about erased the chances of a Vikings' comeback. Patterson, a defensive end playing only his second game this season because of nagging hamstring problems, jumped up and deflected Rich Gannon's pass, caught the ball and ran into the end zone. That gave the Packers a 17-3 lead with 44 seconds to go in the third quarter. The Packers then intercepted Gannon on the Vikings' first three possessions of the fourth quarter, two by rookie LeRoy Butler. Green Bay made it 24-3 with one minute left on Don Majkowski's 6-yard run. Minnesota scored with 38 seconds to go when Anthony Carter caught a 49-yard pass from Gannon that was deflected in the end zone. The Vikings recovered an onside kick, but Mark Murphy made the Packers' fifth interception with 24 seconds to go. The touchdown run by Thompson, the team's No. 1 pick from the University of Minnesota, capped a 68-yard drive featuring a 21-yard pass from Majkowski to Perry Kemp and a facemask call on Minnesota. Green Bay scored in the first quarter on Chris Jacke's 35-yard field goal four plays after Herschel Walker fumbled at the Green Bay 15 on the Vikings' first play from scrimmage. Minnesota mounted a drive from its 46 to the Packers' 3 as Carter caught three passes. But Gannon was stopped short on a third-and-1 quarterback draw and the Vikings settled for a 20-yard field goal by Donald Igwebuike with 10:19 left in the first half. That tied the game 3-3. Igwebuike, under investigation in a heroin-smuggling case, missed a 42-yard attempt in the third quarter.
