(GREEN BAY) - Jan Stenerud kicked a 19-yard field goal with three seconds left to lift Green Bay to a 31-28 victory over the Bears, keeping the Packers' playoff hopes alive. Green Bay remained in contention for the NFC Central title. Stenerud's kick came after the Bears' Dennis McKinnon returned a punt 59 yards for a touchdown to tie the game 28-28 with 1:50 to go. The game-winner came after the Packers had driven to the 3 from their own 22. The big play in the drive was a 67-yard pass from Lynn Dickey to James Lofton to the Bears' 6. After two running plays by Jessie Clark took the ball to the 3, Stenerud came on for the clincher. The Packers broke out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to some big-yardage plays by Ellis. Ellis finished with 141 yards. On Green Bay's first possession, Ellis blasted through the left side of the line and went 71 yards to the Bears' 9. One play later, Harlan Huckleby went around right end for the touchdown for a 7-0 lead only 4:45 into the game. Later in the period Dickey connected on a 5-yard scoring toss to Paul Coffman with 1:57 to go for a 14-0 lead. One of the key plays was a 40-yard pass over the middle to Ellis to the Chicago 33. The Bears got back into the game 11 seconds later when Jim McMahon hit Willie Gault on an 87-yard scoring strike. Green Bay increased its lead to 21-7 on Ellis' 12-yard run with 3.01 left in the half. Chicago trimmed the score to 21-14 when Matt Suhey blasted into the end zone from the 1 with 16 seconds left in the half. Ray Nitschke's number 66 was officially retired at the half.
